What goes on rentedhere, and what doesn't
Version 2026-10-24 · Last updated
rentedhere is a record the next tenant can rely on. That works only if it is made of facts, written by the people they happened to, about homes rather than people. This policy is part of the terms.
How to write a record
- Your own tenancy only. Write about a home you rented yourself, once for each stay.
- Facts, in your own words. The deposit you paid, what came back and when, what was deducted and why, how long a repair took, what was said. Amounts and dates help the next tenant more than adjectives.
- Say what happened, not what someone is. “₹40,000 of the ₹1,20,000 deposit was kept for painting; I wasn't shown a bill” is useful. “The owner is a cheat” is not, and can be defamatory.
- Write a rule as the rule. “No non-veg cooking” or “no bachelors” is a fact about a home; who the residents are is not.
- Photos of the home only, that you took: no people, no documents, nothing that shows a face or a number. We strip the location data from every photo.
- You can choose to publish only after you move out, or only after your deposit comes back. Until then the review waits.
Never post
- Names, phone numbers, emails or addresses of people: owners, brokers, caretakers, neighbours, other tenants. Owners appear as owner handles. Phone numbers, emails, links and Aadhaar-like numbers are refused in public text automatically.
- Caste, religion or community, of anyone. A mention is held until a moderator has read it, and comes out.
- Abuse: slurs, threats, insults, or harassing anyone, including because of their gender.
- Intimate or sexual images, anything showing a person's private body, and anything involving a child.
- Pretending to be someone else, or writing a record of a tenancy that wasn't yours.
- Paid or traded reviews: a review written for money, a discount, a favour, or to hurt a rival.
- Anything you know is false, and photos made or altered (by AI or otherwise) and passed off as real.
- Anything else the terms or Indian law don't allow.
Owners and PG operators
- Reply under a review as your owner handle: a calm reply with the facts is the fastest correction a reader sees.
- You can't review your own home, and you can't ping it. Former tenants answer pings privately.
- Disagree with a review? Reply, and if it is wrong on the facts or breaks this policy, report it with what the record shows: the agreement, a receipt, a bank transfer, a message.
- Never contact a tenant to pressure them about a review. A moderator who sees it can pause your account.
Listings, room posts and messages
- Only real places, really available, that you own, run or have the owner's go-ahead to let. Brokers don't post as owners.
- Real photos of the place, a rent and deposit you will actually ask for, and nothing that turns people away for their caste, religion or community.
- Never ask for money before a visit: no tokens, advances or UPI payments to someone who hasn't seen the place. When a message asks for one, the reader is shown a caution.
- Listings and posts stay up for 30 days; renewing is free. Mark a place rented as soon as it is.
- Messages follow the same rules. Your number goes to the other person only when you switch on “share my number”.
How the checks and holds work
- Everything you write is checked as you send it. Text with a phone number, an email, a link or an Aadhaar-like number is sent back for you to fix.
- Text with abusive words, or a mention of caste or religion, is held: nobody else sees it until a moderator has read it and either publishes it or turns it down with a reason.
- Everything else goes up at once. The checks are deliberately short; moderators and reports catch the rest.
Reports
- Every review, comment, listing, room post, profile and conversation has a Report button. A moderator reads every report.
- When 3 different people report a listing or a room post, it is paused until a moderator looks.
- The person you report is never told who reported them.
- For anything a report can't cover (your own data, a legal notice, a court order), write to the grievance officer.
Disputes about the facts
- We don't decide who was right in a deposit dispute. That is for the two people, and if need be a rent authority or a court.
- A review that breaks this policy comes down. A review that is disputed on the facts but breaks no rule stays up, with the owner's reply under it.
- The tenant can edit their review at any time, for example once a deposit comes back.
- We never take a review down because an owner objects to it, and never for money.
Takedowns, pauses and closed accounts
- A moderator who takes something down or turns it down writes the reason, and the person who posted it is told in the app.
- An account that breaks the rules can be paused for 7 days, 30 days or until we lift it; a paused account's live posts are hidden. Accounts that keep breaking the rules are closed.
- Court orders and lawful government orders are acted on within 3 hours; intimate images and impersonation within 2 hours of a complaint.
- What is taken down is kept for 180 days, as the IT Rules require, then may be deleted.
- Every decision is logged with the moderator's handle. To contest one, write to the grievance officer.
